Saturday we made a flying trip into the city... ostensibly to look for a few more flowers to fill in some bare spots but we ended up buying groceries and eating out...hmmmm I love Chinese... I would have liked to have gone to a movie but R wanted to get home in time to still do some seeding...I really did want to go myself...alone, more time to window shop and do some little niggly things that I have been wanting to do..you know, the dollar store, kitchen store that sort of stuff...nothing R would be interested in doing which is why they have kind of piled up...they keep getting left for another time.. but he insisted on coming along...and never lets me drive...now I do admit that peripheral vision on the left side is a bit of an issue at times since my stroke in that eye but I really am quite capable of driving..he just likes to taxi me around. Or perhaps its his way of keeping track of the money I spend...hahahhaaha
On Sunday, I planted the flowers we bought...and watered my tomato plants that I had put in the garden. R was seeding in the field. I got to watch a swarm of hornets...build a nest...in one afternoon...right outside our back door...I guess they figured it was close to the hummingbird feeder and water. There appeared to be about 10 of them busy building and there was nothing there in the morning, but by supper time it was finished... R will have to get rid of it, because I am very allergic to hornet stings...epi pen kind of allergic...
On Monday it was very overcast and I was intending to mow my lawn...but at breakfast time a friend called and asked if they could drive out our way and bring her mother for a tour....and I agreed... so then I really had to mow the lawn...since I have a certain reputation for excellence that I have to maintain I had to do the trimming as well, when it was the no trim week...ahahahahah I skip trimming every other week because it is my least favorite thing to do in the yard. So when I was done in the lawn it looked fabulous...and I should have been happy with that...but ooooohhhhh nooooooo not me...miss overachiever...I decide to mow the ditches as well...which R usually does with the big bush mower...first I had trouble starting the little tractor....that should have been my first red flag....but oblivious me...I kept trying and threw my arms in the air in victory when it finally started....hahahhaa I went mowing...and my first swipe down the road between us and our single neighbour Kenny, I had trouble steering the damned thing...arm strong steering, it is a Romanian tractor after all...and didn't clear the gate I was turning in front of...I clipped one of the gate posts, which I haven't done in over 25 yrs. and tore the barbed wire gate right off its post...so I had to stop and jimmy rig it back up because R had bulls in that field...when I climbed over the fence to get back to the tractor...I lost my balance and fell into a tangled bunch of wild rose bushes....ooooouuuuuuuchhhhh ... two days later and I am still feeling little needly thorns in my legs....and I gashed my leg up good on a dead tree limb....anyway, I hobbled back to the stupid tractor and did a wheelie when I let the clutch out because I forgot to idle the damned thing down before I shifted it into gear....honestly, you'd think I just learned how to driving tractor for J's sake. I was heading up the road on the very edge of it mowing the grass as i made my way back towards our driveway...when the tractor sputtered, jerked a few times and died.....apparently out of gas.....
As I sat there with my head bent to the steering wheel in defeat...I said to no one in particular....okay it's official, I really am sorry I took this tractor out of the yard....hahahahahahahaha I had to walk to the house and then to get a quad and go into the field to ask R what I had to do to get the tractor to start once I had put fuel in it....because I remembered it being quite a procedure the last time it happened to him.
Well he got the darned thing going after lunch and a kindly finished the two swipes I had left to do... all that trouble for three passes with the mower...good grief.
By the time supper came and went I was extremely sore and sick and I kept waiting for them to call and cancel, because it had started raining around 5 pm and never let up....ahahahahaha so they came anyway I had made a lemon meringue pie
but we never did go for a tour of the yard...after all that hard work.....ugggghhhh. that'll teach me...pride and vanity....
Today between trips taking R back and forth to the field to move his equipment to another plot of land I managed to cut some rhubarb and after lunch, set about making rhubarb and strawberry preserves and rhubarb and Saskatoon preserves..
.we like it on ice cream...and R eats it with angel food cake... that's another monkey off my back...because as soon as the rhubarb starts to grow in the spring R starts dropping his not so subtle hints about how much he likes that preserve he has on his ice cream all the time...
